Dick Gruber and Jason Rhode discuss what to do the first day on the job in a new children’s ministry leadership setting. Dick shares the acrostic “PRIMED” to remind children’s ministry leaders to Pray, Remember, Inventory, Meet with, Evaluate, and Do not. Here is Dick’s outline [Word].

Jason also wrote an article on “Getting Started in Children’s Ministry” that reinforces many of the points made in this episode.

In our next episode, we’ll be discussing ministry to children with disabilities and look forward to having Rev. Larry Sauter, missionary to people with disabilities, join us for the discussion. Send in your questions and have them answered on-air.

One Response to “Episode 3 – First Day on the Job”

  1. I appreciated this podcast a lot and wish that I had heard it when I first started my job. But as Dick said, the things mentioned are good to consider every few months, no matter how long we’ve been a children’s minister.

There’s one thing I would add under the category of Do Not: Don’t get involved in everything right away. It can be easy to believe that certain things will fall apart without me, but they probably won’t. However, if a person does try to get involved in everything right away, it can spread them too thin. It can also give people the impression that the children’s pastor is going to take care of everything, resulting in others backing off from what they were previously doing.
